At the Unpacked presentation, Samsung showed the fourth generation of its foldable Galaxy Z smartphones. Traditionally, t two models represent the line: Fold4, which looks like a folding tablet, and the compact Flip4 clamshell. Here’s what you need to know about them.
Galaxy Z Fold4.
This smartphone runs on Android 12L, designed specifically for tablets and foldable devices. The applications in this version are different from the standard ones: for example, in TikTok you can scroll through the comments while watching the video itself.
The new interface will be useful not only for entertainment. Improved multiscreen mode and a dock with favorite applications makes it easier to work with email and office applications.
The internal screen is a 7.6-inch AMOLED with a resolution of 2176 × 1812 pixels, 120 Hz refresh rate and HDR10+ support. The external display is slightly smaller, with a 6.2-inch diagonal, 23.1:9 aspect ratio and a resolution of 2316×904 dots. It is protected from scratches by the latest Gorilla Glass Victus+.
Inside is a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor, complemented by 12GB of fast LPDDR5X RAM. The amount of internal memory depends on the modification: there is a choice of 256 GB, 512 GB and 1 TB. There is no microSD slot, but there is a tray for two SIM cards and eSIM support.
The main camera is triple: 50 megapixel main module, 12 megapixel ultraWide-angle, plus a 10 megapixel TV. The external front camera has a resolution of 10 megapixels, hide internal one under the screen and has a more modest 4 megapixels.
The 4,400 mAh battery supports the fast wired charging of 25 watts. Without the wire, the maximum power is 15 watts. The moisture protection standard is IP68.
Galaxy Z Flip4.
In terms of design, the clamshell hasn’t much changed compared to the third generation. There are two noticeable improvements: a more functional external display, which holds more information, and an updated internal display, which is a less noticeable crease.
Galaxy Z Flip4 retained the main display, its 6.7-inch diagonal. It’s an AMOLED matrix with FHD+ resolution and 120 Hz refresh rate. As in Fold4, it is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus+, a similar panel covers the outer screen.
The updated 1.9-inch external display can be used as a viewfinder when taking selfies with the main camera, view notifications from widgets, use cards from Samsung Pay and manage smart home devices without opening the main screen.
In this generation, the camera received special attention. Samsung emphasized the ability to shoot in any position to take optimal shots. The camera itself is dual, the resolution of both models is 12 megapixels, there is optical stabilization. The selfies camera has a resolution of 10 megapixels.
As in the Fold4, the clamshell has the latest Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor. However, the RAM here is only 8 GB, and the built-in - 512 GB in the maximum modification.
It reduced the hinge, which allowed to place an increased battery of 3,700 mAh inside (versus 3,300 mAh in the last generation). Fast charging supported by 25W, with which the smartphone charges up to 50% in just half an hour. The device is also compatible with wireless charging.
Availability and pricing
The Galaxy Z Fold5 will be available in beige, blue and black, priced from $1,799 (≈110,400 rubles) starting August 26.
The Galaxy Z Flip4 will go on sale on August 26 for a price starting at $999 (about 61,300 rubles). There will be four colors to choose from: purple, graphite, blue and rose gold. It will also be possible to assemble a unique Bespoke Edition smartphone by choosing the colors of both covers and chassis on Samsung’s website
